Workshop Descriptions <--- "Secret Link" jk
Session I:
Workshops reveal masks that socially construct perceptions of a person's identity.
The workshops of Session I will open our eyes to masks which exist on a more personal level. By discovering socially created identities we will make an absolute statement that "masks" exist. Such identities include social classes and a view of Filipino American privilege, religion regarding gender/transgender, and the effect of language barriers. We explore various identities to understand how Filipinos see themselves portrayed to others, in both Filipino and Non-Filipino communities.
Session II:
Workshops reconnect delegates to modes of expression that have been masked and marginalized.
Session II seeks to build upon the delegates' knowledge of self through exposing them to various methods of expression. Each workshop will be focusing on a different medium of art present in Filipino and Filipino American communities today.
Session III:
Workshops expose important issues that must be unmasked in order to be addressed.
This set of workshops aims to unmask the image of the Philippines solely as an exotic paradise primed for tourist visits. While not completely refuting this ideal impression, Session III will expose that amidst all the splendor of our homeland, there are many issues that go unnoticed or have simply been accepted as social facts that will not change. However, all is not lost, as the workshops will also be discussing ways that Filipino American students can take part in the country's and communities' improvement.
