Unmask <--- know why
Description
Unmask is a charge to question, to learn, and to act.
Statement of Purpose
FIND, Inc. 2008 Spring Conference, Unmask, will introduce delegates to several facets related to Filipinos and Filipino Americans. With the knowledge gained at Unmask, delegates will be charged with the responsibility to share this knowledge with others to unmask preconceived notions of Filipinos, Filipino Americans, the Philippines, and Filipino America. FIND, Inc. 2008 Spring Conference will ultimately lift marginalized experiences of Filipinos and Filipino Americans.
Question. Masks conceal honest reality. It is important to question the world around us. We have created masks for ourselves. In addition, others have constructed masks for us. If we continue to wear our masks we accept preconceived notions of Filipinos, Filipino Americans, the Philippines, and Filipino America.
Learn. Masks marginalize teaching. Filipino American studies remain a suppressed field of teaching. In order for others to accept the history, culture, issues, and identity of Filipinos and Filipino Americans as significant, we must continually educate ourselves and share our knowledge with others.
Act. Masks hinder action. Collectively, we can address issues facing Filipino and Filipino American communities in the United States, the Philippines, and abroad. The problem lies in potential actors being unaware of needed action. From charity to activism, action comes in many forms. We must learn how to take action and where action is needed.
Main Objectives
In the Fall of 2007, District VII of the Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue, Inc. hosted our 2007 Fall Dialogue, entitled Pagtuturo at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia. The purpose of Pagtuturo was to promote District VII's Advancing Filipino American Studies program. FIND, Inc. 2008 Spring Conference, Unmask, supports the purpose of 2007 Fall Dialogue by:
- Unmasking marginalized Filipino and Filipino American topics;
- Unmasking self perceptions of being Filipino and Filipino American;
- Unmasking socially constructed perceptions of Filipinos and Filipino Americans;
and
- Unmasking the responsibility to educate others of Filipino and Filipino American identity, culture, and issues.
